In a clear defiance of rates prescribed by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), most of the butchers in Kohima were selling a Kg of beef at Rs 250, an excess of Rs 10 per Kg. Grabbing the opportunity caused by current shortage of pork in Kohima, butchers in many parts of the city were overcharging helpless buyers.
When contacted, a KMC official, on the condition of anonymity, admitted that the Council was aware of the situation and was going to respond. The official also blamed buyers for paying the amount asked by butchers despite KMC having published rates in local dailies. When KMC was trying to render help, official said it was the duty of the public to also reciprocate in order to make KMC order effective. Through its earlier notice, KMC informed the public to lodge any grievances or complaints at 9436203061 or 9774644639. Recently, there had been outcries against overcharging of meat above the prescribed rate even after lockdown relaxations.
