Shillong, Jun 17: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Brahma Deo Ram Tiwari on Wednesday indicated that the by-election to the Shillong Lok Sabha seat will be held after the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in October, 2026.
Tiwari said the SIR would start from June 20, 2026, and the final electoral roll will be published on October 7, 2026, after completion of the revision exercise. The house-to-house survey by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be carried out from June 30 to July 29, 2026, covering all polling stations across the State, he informed. Tiwari informed that the draft electoral roll will be published on August 5, 2026, following which the period for filing claims and objections will continue till September 4, 2026.
He further informed that the qualifying date for the revision exercise in Meghalaya has been fixed as October 1, 2026.
“We are hopeful that the by-election to the Shillong parliamentary seat will be conducted after October 7,” Tiwari said.
The by-election is necessitated following the demise of sitting Voice of the People Party (VPP) MP Ricky Andrew Jones Syngkon.
Syngkon died on February 19, 2026, evening following a massive cardiac arrest while playing futsal in Shillong.
The VPP has announced Dr. Batskhem Myrboh as its candidate, while the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya has declared Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait as the party’s official candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.
The United Democratic Party, an ally of the NPP, has named senior advocate Vivan G.K. Kynta as its candidate for the by-election.
