Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse: a legacy that inspires generations

“Captain Kenguruse did not just defend a peak in Kargil—he elevated the spirit of a generation” – Lt Col Amit Shukla
Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, MVC (Posthumous), stands tall among India’s valiant heroes, not just for his incredible bravery during the Kargil War, but for the enduring inspiration his sacrifice continues to offer to the youth of India—particularly those from the North-Eastern part of India. His story is one of exceptional courage, leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility that resonates powerfully with young minds seeking meaning and purpose.
Born in Nerhema village of Kohima district, Nagaland, Captain Kenguruse was a school teacher before he answered the call to serve his country. Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1998, he joined the 2 Rajputana Rifles. Within a year, during Kargil War of 1999, he would etch his name into the annals of history while serving the nation.
On the night of 28 June 1999, during an assault on a vital enemy position at 16,000 feet in the Drass sector, Captain Kenguruse volunteered to lead an attack, with a handful of highly motivated and trained Ghatak Platoon. Faced with a steep, icy cliff and heavy enemy fire, he kicked off his boots to climb barefoot to attain better grip. Despite being critically wounded, he charged ahead, single-handedly eliminating multiple enemy soldiers before succumbing to his injuries. His heroism earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award, posthumously.
But Captain Kenguruse’s legacy is more than a tale of battlefield valour—it is a beacon for young people navigating a world full of challenges and distractions. His life teaches that true greatness lies not in comfort or fame, but in character, sacrifice, and service.

  1. Unyielding Courage: Despite being wounded, Capt Kenguruse climbed barefoot up a cliff under enemy fire to neutralize enemy positions. His raw courage reminds young people that true strength lies in the will to act, not in the absence of fear.
  2. Leadership by Example: He led from the front, inspiring confidence in his troops through personal example. Youth today can learn to lead not by words, but through action and selfless service.
  3. Dedication to Duty: Even in the face of death, he remained committed to his mission. His sacrifice teaches the value of responsibility and putting the nation above self.
  4. Pride in Identity: Capt Kenguruse took immense pride in his roots, showing that regional identity can harmoniously blend with national service. He inspires youth from the Northeast—and all of India—to serve with pride, regardless of background.
  5. Legacy of Inspiration: His story continues to ignite patriotism and determination in generations of young Indians. He is proof that one life, lived with purpose, can inspire a nation.
Today, schools, academies and military institutions proudly narrate his story to inspire students and cadets alike. His memory continues to ignite dreams, fuel ambitions, and shape patriots. His sacrifice is not just remembered; it is lived by every young Indian who chooses courage over comfort, service over self and country over everything.
