Catholic Association of Nagaland leadership transition marked in Kohima

DIMAPUR

The new team of the Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) formally assumed office after a handing and taking over ceremony held on February 15 at the Administrative Hall of Mary Help of Christians Cathedral, Kohima. The event marked the official transition of leadership for the new term.
The programme began with an opening hymn and prayer, followed by scripture reading from the Gospel of Matthew (20:25–28) proclaimed by Khamkiumong L. John, emphasizing servant leadership. Veronica Nriame led the intercessory prayers, which included thanksgiving for the outgoing office bearers and petitions for wisdom, integrity and guidance for the incoming team. Prayers were also offered for unity among Christians, peace and harmony in Nagaland, and renewed commitment to the mission of the Church. The programme was compered by Stephen Dukru. In his exhortation, Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Nagaland, encouraged the newly elected office bearers to lead with humility, integrity and a spirit of service, reminding them that leadership in the Church is entrusted for the good of the faithful and society at large. The report for the period 2020–2026 was presented, highlighting key initiatives and activities undertaken during the tenure. Outgoing treasurer Moses P. Yimchunger presented the statement of accounts, which was duly adopted.
Outgoing president, Dr. Johnny Ruangmei (2020–2026), in his farewell address, expressed gratitude to the clergy, executive members and faithful for their support and prayers. Reflecting on his tenure, he said leadership in the Church is less about authority and more about grace, describing it as a shared pilgrimage that continues beyond individuals.
The formal transition included the signing of the handing over document and exchange of official files and financial records between outgoing and incoming leaders, signifying continuity, accountability and responsible stewardship. Jonas Yanthan formally assumed office as president of CAN, assuring his commitment to serve faithfully in accordance with the Constitution of the Association and in communion with the Church.
