Catholic institutions in Nagaland to observe day of mourning

Bishop of Kohima, Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as “a true shepherd of God’s people” who dedicated his life to proclaiming the Gospel, championing the cause of the poor and marginalized, and calling the world to embrace compassion, justice, and care for creation.

As a mark of respect, all Catholic institutions in the Diocese of Kohima will remain closed on Tuesday, April 22, and will observe a special day of mourning, including a condolence service.

In a statement issued by the Bishop’s House, Kohima, Bishop Thoppil said Pope Francis led the Church with “wisdom, humility, and an open heart,” and his vision to transform the Church into a synodal community—one that listens, discerns, and journeys together—had left an indelible mark at all levels.

Highlighting the late Pontiff’s legacy, Bishop Thoppil noted that Pope Francis’ compassion for the poor, especially migrants and refugees, earned him global recognition. He also lauded the Pope’s efforts in peacebuilding, fostering interreligious dialogue, and his landmark encyclical Laudato Si, which sparked a global movement on environmental care.

The statement said that details from Rome regarding the funeral of Pope Francis are awaited and that further announcements will be made concerning diocesan observances to honour the late Pontiff.
