Citing instances where Christians were not allowed to celebrate their festivals, especially Christmas, in some parts of the country, the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI) mission department has requested the Prime Minister of India to give directive to all the States to ensure peace during Christmas season.
In an appeal to the Prime Minister of India, CBCNEI mission secretary Rev. Dr. Jolly Rimai said that though law and order was a State matter, a directive from the prime minister would ensure peaceful celebration of Christmas for Christians in the country. CBCNEI also requested the prime minister to ensure that Christian faith was respected by all and Christians were allowed to celebrate their festivals peacefully. “Here in the North East Indian states, where Christians are majority, we did not disturb festivals of the Hindus or the Muslims,” CBCNEI said, adding that the same spirit of brotherhood was expected from Hindu community also.
