A Capacity Building Programme (CBP) for farmers of Nagaland on “scientific aquaculture” and inauguration of Aquarium Unit on fish germplasm of Nagaland was held on May 13 at Brooder Fish Farm Dimapur.
According to a DIPR report, the programme was organised by Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture and Department of Fisheries (ICAR- CIFA) and Aquatic Resources, government of Nagaland. Addressing the gathering as chief guest, ICAR-CIFA director, Dr. Pramoda K. Sahoo termed the day as a proud and special moment and thanked the team for making the project a reality. Dr. Sahoo said different fish species of Nagaland has very useful potential and the potentials could be exploited through the interest of the people and the department. Informing that huge number of fish species, about 60 percent was being imported into the country, he requested the farmers and the stakeholders to pass them to the department for preservation instead of consuming it. He also underscored the importance of encouraging the younger generation to preserve new species of fish. In a key note address, director of fisheries and AR government of Nagaland, Rongsennungba termed the project as the dream project which was achieved through the endless help from CIFA.
He said the state has a rich infantry of fish spices which harvest different kinds of fishes as it has a 42 aquarium of houses of indigenous fishes collected and donated from the 16 districts of Nagaland. He reminded the department for proper preservation and maintenance of the unit for the benefit of the people.
In a brief highlight of the project, deputy director of fisheries & AR, Dr. Vimezo Kire also acknowledged the support of CIFA. He also urged the staff to take care of the new aquarium so that the species would be well preserved. He said that this preserved aquarium would help and inspire children in their studies to get information about different kinds of fish species.
The programme was chaired by joint director of fisheries & AR, Ketusielie Angami; the Aquarium Unit was dedicated by DABA assistant pastor Lanuakum Longchar and vote of thanks was delivered by SDFO, Shamator, Shamyung O Ongh.
