DIMAPUR: Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI) celebrated International Domestic Workers’ Day on June 16 at CAN Building, D Block, Kohima, under the theme “Recognising Domestic Workers: Rights, Dignity and Decent Work for All.” A total of 154 domestic workers participated in the programme.
According to a press release, resource speaker Lanueinla Imchen, Helpline Administrator, Women Helpline 181, Nagaland Women and Child Development Control Room, highlighted the constitutional and legal rights of domestic workers, with emphasis on protections available under law. She spoke on issues of sexual and verbal abuse, workplace exploitation, discrimination and right to privacy, urging workers to be aware of their rights and to seek help through legal channels when violated.
Peteu, Call Operator of Women Helpline 181, shared information on government schemes and support services for women’s safety and empowerment, and encouraged participants to utilise the helpline services.
Representing domestic workers, Usha Achumi shared her experiences and challenges faced in daily life.
The programme underscored the importance of protecting and supporting domestic workers, ensuring dignity, respect and fairness, while raising awareness of their rights and strengthening collective efforts towards safer and more inclusive workplaces.
