Agartala, Sept 6 (PTI): The Union Ministry of Home Affairs will send a high-level team to Tripura next week to hold consultations with stakeholders and fast-track implementation of a tripartite agreement on the development of indigenous people, a senior TMP MLA said on Sunday.
The development came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Debbarma held a meeting in New Delhi to discuss implementation of the agreement.
The TMP had signed the pact with the Centre and the Tripura government in 2024 for the overall development of the state’s indigenous people.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs will send a high-level delegation to the state next week to hold talks and detailed consultations for the fast-track implementation of the tripartite agreement,” TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma told reporters at Agartala airport.
He said land rights, a longstanding demand of the party, would be accorded priority during the consultations. “I spoke with the party supremo, who confirmed the team’s proposed visit to the state to begin the initiative for implementing the tripartite agreement,” he said. Debbarma said the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act, 1960, would need to be amended to ensure that land rights within areas under the jurisdiction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are protected.
“We expect that a draft on the revision of the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act, 1960 will be prepared within the next 15 days. We want the lands under the Sixth Schedule areas to be handed over to the tribal council,” he said.
The MLA also said the TMP would initiate formal talks with the BJP for seat adjustment for the Village Committee elections scheduled to be held on September 28.
“While Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath will initiate the dialogue on behalf of the BJP, our delegation will be led by party general secretary Brishaketu Debbarma,” he said.
