CGBU points out that GBs are nominated not elected

Chakhroma GBs Union (CGBU) has reacted sharply to the statement of the Dimapur District GB Association (DDGBA) over the latter’s proposal to hold election for new team of DDGBA office bearers.

CGBU in a statement reminded that as per constitution of DDGBA, office bearers are to be nominated by a Nomination Committee on a rotational basis among various member tribes and hence there was no provision for holding election.

CGBU pointed out that so far the post of president was earlier held by Angami, Lotha and Sumi candidates and a member of another tribe should be nominated as per provisions of DDGBA constitution. CGBU reminded that the institution of the Gaon Bura(GB) was not hereditary nor was elective but was selective. It also pointed out that CGBU has been carrying on the tradition of selection of head GB instituted by the British (Samaguting) in 1840.

CGBU noted that though the tenure of the present team had ended in May 2018, the present team extended their tenure on their own volition and was “now seeking re-election by means of unfair practices.” CGBU has, appealed to the government authority not to recognise any new team set up by “undemocratic means” and in contravention to the age old practice.

CGBU has cautioned that it would dissociate from the DDGBA if the laid down norms were violated by “going against the will of the people for vested interest”. The signatories included CGBU president Thepfukedo Kuotsu, vice presidents Voto Meyase and Thepfuko Nagi, general secretary Atso Gwizan, treasurer Pekru-U Shüya, finance secretary Vtsore Kense, information & publicity secretary Abou Sote and advisor Ningusie Meyase.
