DIMAPUR: Chakhesang community has informed the public that regulations governing the use of Chakhesang traditional attires and ornaments, adopted on May 20, 2025, have been put in place to protect and preserve the community’s cultural heritage.
According to the Chakhesang Attire Regulatory Board (CARB), the regulations became necessary following instances of misuse of traditional attires, resulting in misrepresentation of Chakhesang customs and traditions. It stated that the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage were essential to maintaining the identity of the community, as every traditional attire and motif reflected its unique history, values and way of life.
CARB further informed that Chakhesang attires and ornaments have received Geographical Indication (GI) registration and are protected under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. It cautioned that misuse, cultural appropriation or defamation of traditional attires and ornaments would be viewed seriously and could attract legal action.
Under the regulations, the original colours, hues, patterns and designs of all traditional attires and ornaments must be maintained. Traditional motifs are also required to be used strictly according to custom, with shawl motifs prohibited from being used on skirts and vice versa. Attires and ornaments designated for men or women, including merit wears, must be worn in accordance with traditional norms, while age-group distinctions are also to be respected.
The rules further prohibit individuals or groups from introducing new motifs for shawls or skirts and claiming them as authentic Chakhesang traditional attire. In addition, unauthorised designs cannot be worn or displayed at national or international events without prior approval from the CARB.
The community appealed to all concerned to respect and adhere to the regulations in order to safeguard the authenticity and integrity of Chakhesang cultural heritage for future generations.
