DIMAPUR: Nagaland witnessed widespread condemnation following the alleged shooting of Langshi Chang, a daily-wage labourer from Chendang Saddle Village, Tuensang district, at Chiechama Village under Kohima district on September 16. The incident, reportedly involving a .22 calibre rifle, has drawn sharp criticism from community organizations who have demanded swift justice, victim protection and stronger safety measures for workers.
Chang Union Dimapur (CUD): The Chang Union Dimapur (CUD) expressed shock and outrage over the violent attack on Langshi Chang, allegedly carried out by Medochulie Rurhie. In its statement, CUD described the act as “horrific and senseless,” stressing that it endangered the safety of the public at large.
Highlighting the victim’s vulnerable background, the Union noted that Chang is the sole breadwinner supporting his widowed mother and family. CUD emphasized that the assault was not only on an individual but on the peace, safety, and democratic values of the community. The Union appealed to law enforcement agencies to deliver justice without delay, in accordance with the law.
Phom Union Kohima (PUK): The Phom Union Kohima (PUK) strongly condemned the shooting, calling it a grave threat to the dignity and safety of workers. According to the Union, the attack was preceded by intimidation, including stone pelting and verbal threats warning labourers to stop work at the construction site of the Government Primary Health Centre.
PUK underscored the right of every worker to a safe environment and urged authorities to investigate whether adequate safety measures were in place. It demanded a thorough, impartial probe, prosecution under relevant laws and accountability for any negligence.
The Union also highlighted the financial distress faced by Chang’s family due to his injuries, urging the State Government to ensure justice and protection. Standing in solidarity with the victim and his family, PUK appealed for peace and prayed for his speedy recovery.
