Chathe River erosion triggers emergency measures

DIMAPUR

In response to alarming erosion along the Chathe River Bank at Seitheke Basa, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Chümoukedima, has initiated urgent protection work to counter further damage.
According to a DIPR report, the notice from the Office of the Extra Assistant Commissioner, Seithekema, the intervention involves placing boulders along vulnerable sections of the river near the Nagaland for Christ Prayer Centre. The operation is being carried out on a war footing due to the rapid deterioration of the riverbank.
Access challenges have arisen as heavy vehicles transporting boulders cannot utilize the Seitheke Basa route, which has become unsafe due to the river’s force and the weakened terrain. In light of this, an alternative route has been designated through 5th Mile Model Village to facilitate movement of materials.
The DDMA has sought cooperation from the Village Councils of Seitheke Basa and 5th Mile Model Village to ensure smooth logistics and timely execution of the project.
