Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Sep 16 (PTI): India made a strong start at the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The men’s team defeated Thailand 3-1, while the women’s side blanked the Dominican Republic 4-0.
For the men, Nihal Sarin struck first with a smooth win over Thanadon Kulpruethanon. World champion D Gukesh followed up with a sharp attacking victory against Faris Rashid Alriyami, and Vidit Gujrathi added another point by outplaying Tupfah Khumnorkaew. However, Arjun Erigaisi, despite being in control for much of his game, faltered late against Prin Laohawirapap. The Thai youngster capitalized on Arjun’s blunder in the sixth hour, forcing resignation and denying India a clean sweep.
The women’s team was flawless. Koneru Humpy opened with a win over Franchesca Ramirez Luzon, while R Vaishali comfortably beat Miguelina De La Rosa Martinez. Vantika Agrawal converted a tricky endgame against Mary Loly Gonzalez Peguero, and debutant B Savitha Shri rounded off the victory by defeating Karla Mya Nunez Diaz.
The Olympiad features 11 rounds, with each match win earning two match points. Game points act as tie-breakers if teams finish level. With convincing opening results, both Indian squads have set the tone for a competitive campaign.
