Chingang delves on challenges faced by mining sector in NE states

Staff Reporter

Department of Geology and Mining (DGM), in collaboration with NITI Aayog, conducted a one-day workshop on Mining Methodologies and Techniques (MMT), with special reference to the hilly terrain of the Northeast, on Thursday at Zone Niathu by the Park, Chümoukedima.

Addressing the gathering as the special guest, advisor DUDA, and Geology & Mining, W Chingang Konyak, expressed gratitude to NITI Aayog for initiating the workshop emphasizing that the workshop would provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by the mining sector in the Northeast and help formulate comprehensive strategies for mineral development.

He highlighted that Northeast was rich in natural resources and accounts for nearly 73% of India’s tertiary coal reserves. Despite this, he noted that the region’s coal production remains relatively low compared to other coal producing states.

“While Assam and Meghalaya significantly contribute to India’s mining sector, particularly through coal and limestone reserves, other Northeastern states have yet to fully harness their mining potential”, he stated.

Addressing the broader mining scenario in the Northeast, Konyak acknowledged that the region faces more significant challenges than other parts of the country due to its geographical isolation, complex socio-political landscape, environmental sensitivities, and unique demographic composition.

According to him, overcoming these obstacles would require a multi-faceted approach, including infrastructure development, improved regulatory frameworks, the adoption of advanced technology, and greater integration of local communities in mining processes.
Dwelling specifically about Nagaland, the adviser pointed out that the state was endowed with minerals such as limestone, coal, nickel-cobalt-chromium, petroleum, natural gas, and dimensional stones.

He however expressed disappointment that no major mineral mines were currently operational in the state, while adding that DGM was actively working to accelerate exploration efforts as part of broader strategy for mineral development.

Konyak also emphasized that dynamics of tribal communities and applicability of national-level mining laws in frontier regions could not be ignored, particularly in states where mineral legislation falls under state jurisdiction due to special constitutional provisions.

Despite these challenges, Konyak remained optimistic that if appropriate strategies were put in place, the region’s mineral resources could play a crucial role in driving economic growth and transformation, and expressed hope that the workshop would shed light on focused and systematic approaches to mining operations, paving the way for sustainable mineral development in the region.

Konyak later urged NITI Aayog to extend support to Northeastern states by helping formulate effective policy and regulatory frameworks, facilitating access to cutting-edge mining technologies, establishing regional centers for mining research, and providing financial and investment support for exploration and infrastructure.

He also stressed the need for responsible and environmentally sustainable mining practices to ensure long-term benefits for the region. He later urged the gathering for active participation, and called on all to engage in discussions, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions that could address the specific mining challenges faced by the Northeast.

Earlier, the inaugural session was chaired by Drilling Engineer DGM, Er. H. Akumlong Sangtam, keynote address delivered by programme director NITI Aayog, Ishtiyaque Ahmed, while deputy adviser NITI Aayog, R. Saravanabhavan, briefed on the workshop’s objectives, and welcome address by principal secretary DGM, Himato Zhimomi.
