Chümou bodies warn against extortion, illegal taxation

DIMAPUR, NOV 7 (NPN): Three organisations in Chümoukedima have urged Naga political groups to restrain their cadres from engaging in anti-social activities, intimidation and extortion, particularly during the festive season.
In a joint statement, the Chümoukedima Town Youth Organisation (CTYO), Chümoukedima Chamber of Commerce and Trade Association (CCCTA) and Chümoukedima Town Council (CTC) said they had received reports about the presence of underground cadres in and around the town.
The organisations also expressed concern over reports that cadres from various factions were demanding taxes and fees from construction workers.
They said Chümoukedima was a peaceful and growing town where local and non-local businesses had been flourishing. They underscored that all establishments must be allowed to operate without fear or intimidation. The organisations warned that any attempt to disrupt the peaceful environment or threaten the business community would not be tolerated. They also cautioned business establishments against paying any form of taxation to individuals or underground groups.
Further, they warned traders against artificially increasing prices to take advantage of the festive season. Any discrepancies or misunderstandings should be reported to the competent authority immediately, they said. The three organisations also reaffirmed the public resolution of “One Government, One Tax”, adopted on February 13, 2014, and called on all concerned to respect the collective decision of the people.
