Nagaland: Churches celebrate Christmas with religious fervor

Churches in Nagaland celebrated Christmas, marking the birth of Jesus Christ, by organising special prayer services and feasts.

Meriema Village: Meriema village celebrated combined mass Christmas at Pheriezou ground, under the theme: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Kelakelieu Niepuu Khrista sü penuoliete – Luke 2:11).

Keduolhoulie Huozha, Convenor of Thenyi, expressed joy and gratitude, emphasizing how the entire village came together, transcending denominational lines to unite as one family in Christ.

The celebration showcased the harmony between various Christian groups—Baptist, Revival, Pentecostal, and Catholic congregations—who collaborated under the guidance of the village council to organize the historic event.


All six khels of Meriema participated, with many villagers traveling from distant places to reconnect with their roots and community during the festive occasion.
The celebration began on December 24 evening where the program commenced with Kelhoulezo Shüya, pastor in-charge, BCM, as the chairperson.


Neilakuolie Huozha, pastor, CRC Meriema preached the word of God on the topic: “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” “Kezei-u nu ketuo themiako kezie kezha puo nguliete” (Matthew 4:16)


Greetings was shared by Neidilhou Keditsu, president MVGOK.
On December 25, morning devotional service, Siekuolie Yaotsu, Asst. Pastor, CRC Meriema led the service and song leader was Kekhriesetuo Keditsu and instrumentalist by Khriesanuo Phewhuo.


The event featured sermons by Rev. Keduolhoulie Shüya, Baptist Church Meriema, focusing on the theme: Luke 2:11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”


The celebration began with an invocation by James Thomas, pastor in-charge, The Pentecostal Church Meriema, followed by Bible Reading in the Old Testament by Dziesetseilie Ciesotsu, Deacon, Model Village Baptist Church, 5th Mile Dimapur and New Testament: Vizotuolie Lhousi, Catechist, St. John Vianney Catholic Church Meriema
Special song was performed by CYE, CRC and BKK, BCM and the event concluded with a mass feast followed by a talent night show.


SBCK: Sumi Baptist Church Kohima (SBCK) celebrated Christmas on December 25.
Extending greetings, Y. Kikheto Sema, chairman, Board of Deacons, SBC Kohima, briefly shared on the life of the beloved Son of God who came to redeem us from the bondage of sin brining peace, Joy, Love to the mankind.


Kikheto said that traditionally during the Christmas festive season, people joyfully exchange various gifts amongst friends, relatives and to the loved ones which is applauded and urged the worshippers to continue this trend.

He however, encouraged them to pursue a new level of celebrating Christmas by taking their noble act beyond horizon and extend the love and joy towards the downtrodden, the oppressed and the lesser privileged group.


He also implored the congregation on the importance of “forgive and forget” and come together for peace and development.


LBCD: Lotha Baptist Church Diphupar (LBCD) celebrated its 52nd Christmas, where associate pastor, Rev. N. Wopansao Ovung preached on the topic, “And of His kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:33). He reminded the congregation to introspect themselves to ascertain whether they are living a committed life acceptable in the sight of God.


At the celebration, DLBC Choir and Christmas 2024 host families presented special songs.
Christmas offertory prayer was pronounced by pastor Rev. Limhathung Lotha while deaconess Marline Kithan reas the scripture.


Deacon Nkhingsao Tungoe invoked God’s blessings while deacon Orensao Kikon pronounced the benediction. CNY director, Ajano B.Patton led the congregation and Renbeno Humtsoe was the pianist. LBCD Christmas 2024 was hosted by the Lotha residents of School Colony Diphupar.


DTNBC: Dimapur Town Nepali Baptist Church (DTNBC) Duncan celebrated Christmas with great enthusiasm and fervor. Speaker, pastor Rajen Thapa delivered a message, from the book of Luke 2:10-13 and emphasizing the significance of Jesus Christ’s birth. He encouraged the congregation to prioritize weekly devotional services and to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.


The celebration featured a range of special performances, including a special number by Youth Ministry. A first-time performance by the Widow’s Group, followed by special numbers by the Women Ministry and DTNBC Choir.


The celebration concluded with a festive Christmas feast for all church members, providing an opportunity for fellowship and community bonding.
