NEW DELHI, OCT 11 (AGENCIES): Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders, including Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ratna Singh, will visit Parliamentary Street Police Station at 10am on Monday to seek a date for a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar, Ranka said in a post on X. “Delhi Police can give us a date for Jantar Mantar in 24 hours, or we will announce our own protest call,” CJP said, adding that its leaders would visit the police station to seek permission.
The move comes a day after Delhi Police detained more than 7,000 protesters across the capital as they attempted to reach Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, Ranka and Das were among those detained on Saturday but were later released. After his release, Dipke vowed to return to the streets, saying he would not be intimidated by the government. “Throw us in jail not just once, but a hundred times,” he said.
Rahul calls for SC march: Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called for a march to the Supreme Court on Monday, urging citizens, opposition parties and civil society groups to join the protest over alleged “vote chori”. He demanded an end to the SIR of electoral rolls and CEC’s resignation.
Supreme Court on Sunday directed authorities to lift prohibitory orders imposed around its complex, stressing that access to justice must remain unhindered and peaceful citizens should not face illegal detention.
The court directed authorities to ensure normal functioning of Delhi Metro and avoid disruption to internet services, subject to law and order conditions.
CJI rejects request: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has rejected INDIA bloc leaders’ request for a meeting to submit a representation on alleged “vote chori”, ANI reported on Sunday. In an email response, the CJI explained the reasons for declining the request. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge had sought an appointment with CJI between 4pm and 5pm on Monday to submit a memorandum demanding action over alleged electoral irregularities.
