CM, Dy CM mourn demise of senior BJP leader

DIMAPUR

Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister Y. Patton have expressed grief over the demise of R. Sopu Metha, former vice president of BJP Nagaland, who passed away on July 8.
In his condolence message, Rio described late Sopu as a respected leader and dedicated social worker who served the Naga community with sincerity. He recalled Sopu’s significant role in the growth of Sovima Village and his earlier service to the nation, which earned him the Ashoka Chakra for bravery.
Sharing a personal connection, Rio said the two shared family ties and a long-standing friendship. “Though we sometimes stood on different political sides, it was always in service to the people,” he stated. The chief minister said Sopu’s contributions to public service and the BJP will be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength and peace during this difficult time.
Y. Patton also conveyed deep sadness over the passing of R. Sapu, a veteran BJP leader who served as Kohima district president for two terms and state vice president from 2009–2012. Patton said Angami’s efforts in strengthening the party across Nagaland earned him wide respect. He described him as a committed leader known for his grassroots connect and organisational skills.
Patton and his family extended heartfelt condolences to Angami’s family, praying for strength and eternal peace for the departed soul.
Meanwhile, Patton also mourned the passing of Mentsio Patton, father of Hachibemo Patton. Patton said late Mentsio Patton, a retired DIS in the Education Department from Old Riphyim village, was remembered for his dedication to public service.
The deputy CM extended prayers and condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time.
