Calls for unity of Dimapur, Chümou and Niuland dists
State chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday inaugurated the Sammogooting Stadium at DC Office Complex, Chümoukedima. Speaking on the occasion, Rio emphasised the significance of the stadium, envisioning it as a hub for unity and progress for Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts.
Dwelling on the rationale behind naming the stadium Sammogooting, Rio recalled that Sammogooting served as the first British administrative center of the Naga Hills district under Assam province in 1866. Rio noted that during this period, British officers introduced several transformative changes, including the establishment of modern educational institutions and the introduction of Christianity in the region.
He further highlighted the implementation of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), which granted special protection to the Nagas and their land, shaping the region’s identity and governance.
Rio emphasized that naming the stadium “Sammogooting Stadium” honors the site’s pivotal role in Nagaland’s history and the Northeast as a whole.
The chief minister expressed hope that the people of Chümoukedima district would appreciate and respect the historical legacy associated with the venue.
Referring to the bifurcation of Dimapur into three districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland, he said that his predecessors thought to make Chümoukedima the district headquarters for Dimapur. He also revealed that his predecessors also wanted to bifurcate Dimapur into three districts due to its huge population.
He appealed the three districts to work together as they shared all facilities, including railways, airways and roads, adding that the three districts would set a good example for rest of the state.
Acknowledging the delay in development of the Multi Disciplinary Sports Complex in Dimapur, Rio its development was financed by the Planning Commission. However, after the NITI Aayog was formed following the dissolution of the Planning Commission, he claimed that funds were not received as per expectations.
However, despite the delays caused by funding challenges, he mentioned that alternative sources had been identified to resume the sports complex’s construction. And once completed, he asserted that it would be the biggest sports complex in Nagaland, and would include facilities for athletics, swimming, wrestling, and other sports, benefiting the entire state.
Meanwhile, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the engineering team, district administration, and contractors of the Sammogooting Stadium, Rio expressed appreciation for completion of the stadium ahead of schedule, and urged citizens to maintain the stadium’s cleanliness and ensure its longevity.
He said the state government was trying to create such facilities in all new and old districts, expressing hope that such stadiums would inspire, foster unity, and also strengthen the community, contributing to the country’s overall development.
In his brief address, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) minister Jacob Zhimomi expressed joy at the inauguration of the stadium. He claimed that the state government was on the right path in setting up sports infrastructures across the state, with the youth performing well in the field of sports.
Delivering a short speech, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs adviser Zhaleo Rio termed the inauguration of the stadium as a red letter day for Chümoukedima. He also expressed happiness that PDA government headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio was focusing on development across the state, especially Chümoukedima. “Change has already come and more on the way,” he quipped.
He appealed Nagas, regardless of their party affiliations, to support the state government, so that all-round development could reach every nook and corner of the state.
In her speech, Industries and Commerce adviser Hekani Jakhalu acknowledged the chief minister for gifting the stadium to Chümoukedima, adding that he hada great vision for the state. She said all 60 legislators were determined in taking Nagaland forward.
Presenting the technical report, CAWD assistant chief engineer Sungtiba Amer mentioned that work commenced in May 2023, and it was expected to be completed within 24 months.
He said the construction was carried out by M/s JK Construction, and the estimated project cost was Rs. 9,51,51,766. The programme was chaired by Chümoukedima Government Higher Secondary School principal Karen Yepthomi, dedicatory prayer offered by SBAC pastor N Benjamin Sema, and welcome address delivered by Chümoukedima deputy commissioner Polan John.
Short speeches were also delivered by commissioner KS Anden Konyak, Chakhroma Public Organisation president Zhato Kimho, and VCC, Chümoukedima village, Razouvotuo Chatsu, followed by an exhibition football match between Chümoukedima Town Council XI and DC XI.
