State chief minister, Dr. Neiphiu Rio along with deputy chief ministers-Y.Patton and T.R. Zeliaing including S. Keoshu Yimkhiung, Er. Kropol Vitsu and Kevipodi Sophie, inspected the landslide-affected stretch of National Highway-2 (NH-2) at Phesama.
At the site, Dr. Rio advised contractors to focus on long-term solutions as landslides were not a one-time issue. He said landslides and road obstructions were a lifelong challenge and suggested that an alternative route be developed with full NH specifications to handle heavy traffic.
Dr. Rio also reiterated that village roads cannot sustain highway traffic loads, leading to frequent damage.
Meanwhile, at the request of Phesama Village Council (PVC) chairman, Dr. Rio directed the deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima to conduct a proper survey to extend disaster compensation for damaged paddy fields and farms of the affected villagers.
He also advised stakeholders to accordingly plan and ensure permanent road solutions since the current damaged roads were temporarily constructed last year on an urgent basis.
Dr. Rio also emphasised on the need for quality work as when issues arose, workers were not solely to be blamed, but the state faces criticism.
He reminded that when the state get visitors from outside but lacks good roads, it created a bad impression.
The chief minister highlighted the road’s strategic importance, as it connects the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama—the venue of the annual Hornbill Festival.
He said that last year, repairs continued until the last minute, adding that this time proper planning must be done in advance and coordinate with NHIDCL, the district administration, and other stakeholders.
Dr Rio urged contractors to ensure proper maintenance, including dividers and beautification by involving the state government, village, or church if necessary.
Later, interacting with officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the chief minister advised against temporary fixes. “Construct a proper CC bridge and, if required, go for a flyover so debris can pass below without obstructing the road,” he said.
The chief minister disclosed that the proposal were under discussions and would be taken up with the roads ministry. He stressed the need for proper blacktopping, drainage, footpaths, and concrete structures in habitation areas. Rio urged the officials to work thoroughly from the ground up to ensure lasting solutions.
Dr. Rio also cautioned against poor debris disposal during landslide clearance, advising proper management to avoid damage to nearby structures.
Deputy chief minister TR Zeliang, who is also minister in-charge of National Highways, advised contractors to deploy more machinery to expedite work.
