Nagaland joined the rest of the country in launching the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivaar Abhiyaan (health campaign with services for women and children) with the state-level programme held Wednesday at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima.
State chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the campaign in the presence of health minister P. Paiwang Konyak, senior government officials, healthcare professionals, community representatives and development partners.
In his address, Rio described the launch as significant, coinciding with the birthday of prime minister Narendra Modi. He extended his greetings and best wishes to the prime minister and called upon citizens to renew their commitment towards realising the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which seeks to transform India into a developed nation by the centenary of independence.
Rio said the campaign, to be observed from September 17 to October 2 and culminating on Gandhi Jayanti, would focus on health and nutrition of women, adolescent girls and children. He described women’s health and empowerment as central to the progress of families, communities and the nation at large. “When women are healthy, educated and empowered, the entire society benefits,” he said.
Rio highlighted the objectives of the campaign, which include strengthening early detection and treatment linkages, delivering essential services to the last mile, promoting awareness and encouraging families to adopt healthy lifestyles.
Across the country, the campaign is being organised at health and wellness centres, PHCs, CHCs and district hospitals.
In Nagaland, Rio informed, the campaign would be conducted in 523 health units, including 12 district hospitals, 26 CHCs, 8 UPHCs, 97 HWC-PHCs, 336 HWC-SCs and 49 AYUSH HWCs. During the fortnight, comprehensive health camps would be organised with services such as screening for hypertension, diabetes and cancer; reproductive and child health services including ANC, PNC, immunisation and anaemia screening; nutrition and menstrual hygiene awareness; TB screening and referrals; enrolment of Nikshay Mitras; and mental health awareness and counselling.
He noted that Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) would be actively involved in providing specialist services, while private hospitals and clinics would also contribute, helping extend the reach of the programme to more communities. Rio called upon citizens, especially women, mothers and young girls, to fully avail the services being offered and urged all stakeholders to rededicate themselves to the goal of universal health coverage.
Expressing appreciation to doctors, nurses, ASHAs, Anganwadi workers and community volunteers, Rio said their dedication would make the initiative successful. “This campaign is an important step toward the vision of a Healthy, Empowered and Viksit Bharat by 2047. Let us work together to build healthier families and a stronger Nagaland,” he said.
Delivering the vote of thanks, minister of health and family welfare, P. Paiwang Konyak, informed that the state had received 26 ambulances, 12 hearses and six Bolero Rapid Response Team (RRT) vehicles under NESIDS, earmarked for strengthening surveillance and healthcare response. Of these, the RRT vehicles are designated for the state headquarters and the districts of Mon, Dimapur, Phek, Tuensang and Zunheboto. He said the initiatives, made possible under the leadership of the chief minister, would go a long way in improving healthcare delivery, ensuring timely support and providing dignity in service to the people.
Paiwang also thanked dignitaries, senior officers, healthcare workers, community representatives, development partners, the media and the organising team for their participation and support. “Today’s event marks not just the launching of a campaign, but a renewed pledge to work collectively for healthier women, stronger families and a more empowered society,” he said.
Commissioner and secretary H&FW, Anoop Kinchi, IAS, who chaired the programme, stressed that the campaign aimed to provide women-centric preventive, promotive and curative services at the community level. He said the broad objectives were to strengthen screening, early detection and treatment linkages, and mobilise communities for healthy lifestyle practices with special focus on nutrition, obesity and blood donation.
Earlier, the state chaplain, Rev. Izieteilung Terieng, invoked blessings, while participants also witnessed the virtual national launch of the campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As part of the event, the chief minister virtually inaugurated integrated public health laboratories at district hospitals in Kohima, Dimapur and Mon, and flagged off ambulances, hearses and RRT vehicles.
