Chi and Mon Land Owners Association (CMLOA), Mon on Friday threatened to boycott the forthcoming town council election if the state government failed to implement the 1964 agreement signed between the land owners and the then district administration of Mon district.
To express resentment against the state government, the CMLOA also staged a protest rally at New Site Junction, Mon Hq, attended by around 3000 people.
The protesters held placard that reads “We demand our Justice, fulfil our demand immediately’, do not take land owners for a ride and stop torturing the land owner”. Later, they proceeded to DC office Mon and handed the memorandum to DC (that contained the decision of CMLOA to boycott civic polls).
Earlier, CMLOA chairman Kamzei, who addressed the rally, alleged that despite numerous representations, the government failed to comply with the agreement signed on February 21, 1964.
He also reminded state government on the agreement no 6,7,8 &10, which stated that the Chui and Mon should enjoy certain percentage of taxes, not exceeding 50% and not less than 30%, released as house or business taxes and that the taxes would be released by district administration.
He said that both sides agreed to review the agreement after 25 years.
However, the chairman alleged that even after 52 years, the state government had not called for review meeting nor released a single penny from the taxes.
Therefore, on August 17, 2015, a review meeting was conducted, and the land owners submitted various suggestions for approval from the higher authority on December 10, 2015.
But, since there was no response, the association on November 30, 2016 served an ultimatum on the government to approve their demand before December 31, 2016. However, the land owners claimed that there was no response from the government till date.
