CMO Dmu organises awareness programme on hepatitis for NGOs

In continuation with the observation of “World Hepatitis Day 2021”, office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dimapur organised an awareness programme on hepatitis on August 7 for NGOs and allied departments.

A press release by CMO Dimapur office stated that resource person senior specialist, District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) Dr. Neilasakuo Linyii  oriented the participants on viral hepatitis and its types.

He said hepatitis A and hepatitis E are transmitted through contaminated water and food, and can be cured without any intervention. However, he cautioned that hepatitis B and hepatitis C are very infectious and would become chronic.

While Hepatitis D is another common hepatitis, Dr. Neilasakuo said it requires concomitant infection with Hepatitis B.

He informed that National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP) was an intervention of government of India with an aim to combat hepatitis and eliminate viral hepatitis C by 2030 by providing free screening, diagnosis and treatment.

He said this program was in its initial stage, however, the services would soon be made available even at the grassroot level. Dr. Neilasakuo also informed that vaccine for Hepatitis B was available and although there was no vaccine for Hepatitis C, it was easily manageable and curable. Deputy CMO Dr. Antoly Suu presented the NVHCP implementation and framework.

Renbothung of Kripa Foundation shared his experience living with hepatitis and his activism towards bringing affordable treatment to others with hepatitis. Director, Kripa Foundation Abou Mere also exhorted the gathering.
