
Cold wave conditions swept through several parts of Nagaland, particularly in the eastern part of the state, even as snowfall was reported from parts of Zunheboto, Kiphire and Tuensang districts on Friday.
As per reports reaching here, Luvishe Old village and adjoining areas under Aghunato sub-division experienced snowfall on Friday, bringing temperatures further down. Locals said snowfall in these parts occurred after every eight to nine years when they experienced coldest winter conditions. Temperature in Aghunato sub-division dipped to 2oC on Friday night. There were also reports that Phisami village in Kiphire district, Shamator in Tuensang district and some areas under Phek district received snowfall. According to AccuWeather report, temperature in Kiphire district was 6oC, while it was 2o C in Tuensang on Friday night. Temperatures in other parts of the State were as follows– Peren 8o C, Wokha 8o C, Noklak 2oC, Phek 3oC, Mokokchung 7oC, Longleng 7oC and Mon 10oC.
Temperature in Dimapur and Kohima also dipped to 11oC and 5oC respectively on Friday night after a light drizzle in morning. Meanwhile, scattered rain and thunderstorms have been forecast over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Cold wave conditions are likely to abate from these regions from December 31 onwards, the department said, adding dense fog at isolated pockets was also very likely over north India, sub-Himalayan region and over North-eastern States in the next 4-5 days that would abate thereafter.
A fresh Western Disturbance was very likely to affect the western Himalayan region from the night of December 30 onwards. Under its influence, major parts of northwest and central India are very likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by hailstorm at isolated places during December 31-January 1, the department warned.
On the other hand, cold wave conditions continued unabated across north India with the weather forecasters saying biting and icy chill would persist for the next three days. Mercury dipped to 4.2o C in the national capital on Friday. According to meteorological department, December 27 was the coldest night of the season in Delhi-NCR, with second-coldest December since 1901.
