College of Nursing CIHSR conducts first aid and basic life support workshop at PCC

DIMAPUR: The College of Nursing, Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), in collaboration with the Department of Education, Patkai Christian College (PCC), organised a one-day workshop on Basic First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) at Patkai Christian College on August 20.
In a press release issued by Mass Communication Department PCC informed that the workshop aimed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively during medical emergencies.
In the first session, Prof. Lidziisa engaged students in an interactive discussion on the importance of first aid, explaining its objectives such as preserving life, preventing conditions from worsening, promoting recovery and providing psychological support. She emphasised the principles of remaining calm, assessing injuries, ensuring safety, and controlling bleeding promptly. The session concluded with a reflection on 1 Peter 4:10, encouraging students to use their gifts to serve others.
Subsequent sessions were conducted by nursing interns. Kechegi Khing addressed the management of bleeding and epistaxis, demonstrating practical techniques for controlling bleeding and assisting nosebleed cases. The interns also explained first-aid measures for syncope (fainting). Imnasangla Longkumer introduced breathing techniques such as diaphragmatic and box breathing and explained strategies for assisting individuals experiencing panic attacks. She further elaborated on Basic Life Support, stressing the importance of early recognition of cardiac arrest, effective CPR and timely use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
The workshop included hands-on CPR demonstrations, allowing students to practise chest compressions under the guidance of the nursing team. This practical exposure helped participants gain confidence in responding to life-threatening emergencies.
The initiative provided valuable knowledge and practical exposure to students, highlighting the importance of preparedness, quick decision-making, and calm action during emergencies. It also underscored the need to extend basic life-saving skills beyond healthcare professionals, empowering ordinary bystanders to respond effectively and potentially save lives when professional medical assistance is not immediately available.
The programme began with an opening prayer led by assistant professor, Department of Education, Khriesalie, followed by an introduction of the resource persons by Prof. L. Lidziisa. She introduced her team comprising Akumtoshi L. Longkumer, Rashmita Boruah and ten nursing interns and expressed appreciation to the Department of Education for facilitating the collaboration.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Head of the Department of Education, Patkai Christian College, Razoukhrülü Curhah, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, nursing interns, faculty, and students for their active participation. A closing prayer marked the end of the workshop.
