DIMAPUR: Educational institutions across Nagaland organised a series of programmes and activities highlighting academic excellence, community service, and international collaboration.
KCK observes 29th Foundation Day: Kohima College, Kohima (KCK) celebrated its 59th Foundation Day on August 8, 2026 at the college courtyard Saturday, bringing together faculty, students and guests to commemorate the institution’s journey in higher education and honour academic excellence.
The programme was graced by Dr. Watijungshi Jamir, retired additional director, Higher Education and former principal of Kohima College, as special guest. Dr. Medongulie Tseikhanuo, associate professor, Department of Tenyidie, chaired the programme, while principal Dr. Vitsosie Vupru delivered the welcome address. The event featured a prayer, the College Anthem and a special song by members of the EU, Kohima College.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jamir recalled his association with the college and expressed happiness at returning after retirement. He reflected on its early days, noting that the institution was established not through a conventional roadmap but through the convictions and determination of its founders. He said Kohima College, founded on a shared vision, has continued to contribute to society by shaping generations of students. He further noted that the government’s decision to take over the institution demonstrated its value, while its subsequent contribution to education proved its worth.
Dr. Jamir encouraged students, particularly freshers, to carry forward the legacy of Kohima College, make the most of their time and contribute meaningfully to its continuing journey.
The Foundation Day also featured presentation of awards recognising outstanding academic performance. Scholar’s Badges and certificates were presented to meritorious undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with department level awards.
Among the awardees, Manyei Konyak received the Commerce Department’s Outstanding Student Award 2026, while Shukiu T was recognised as History Department topper. Vetazo Veswüh received the UG Meritorious Award 2026 for being the highest scorer in the sixth semester examination. In the postgraduate category, Hengwale Kent and Viketuno Tsükrü secured Nagaland University Rank 1 and Rank 2 respectively.
The IQAC Academic Achievement Awards were presented to university rank holders other than Rank 1, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 and citation. The recipients included Liiline Vemai, Ajano W. Kikon, Viketuno Tsükrü, Pajei K, Shongmo K and Siaga Lungalang.
Hengwale Kent of M.A. Political Science, who secured Nagaland University Rank 1 with a CGPA of 8.81, received the Kohima College Academic Excellence Award for University Topper 2026, comprising a certificate and Rs. 30,000. Liiline Vemai of Economics was honoured with the Alumni Meritorious Award 2025 for securing Nagaland University Top 4 with a CGPA of 8.85, receiving a certificate and Rs. 10,000.
The Dr. Satuo Sekhose Star Pupil Award 2026 was presented to Keneivotuo Kesiezie of the Economics Department. Sponsored by the children of late Dr. Satuo Sekhose, one of the founding fathers of Kohima College, the award carries Rs. 30,000 and a certificate.
The IQAC also honoured four faculty members for their scholarly contributions and publications in peer reviewed and international journals-Dr. Konei Nakhro, Dr. Petevino Chase, Dr. Kekhrieseno Christina and Dr. Thoshusie Katiry.
Sonika Rathu of the History Department was recognised for winning a consolation prize in the NPSC Mentors-2.0 Inkspire Essay Competition 2026, receiving Rs. 3,000 along with free admission and study materials.
The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment to the college’s continuing contribution to higher education and society. As Kohima College enters its 60th year, the occasion served as both a remembrance of its humble beginnings and a reaffirmation of its enduring role in shaping students’ lives.
NSS volunteers undertake road repair under Swachhata Pakhwada: As part of the NSS Swachhata Pakhwada, BSW V Semester NSS Volunteers of the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) actively participated in a road repair and maintenance activity along the stretch leading to College on August 7.
Organised by the NSS Unit of NEISSR, the activity aimed to promote cleanliness, community participation, dignity of labour and social responsibility among students. Volunteers engaged in clearing, levelling and repairing the road, improving uneven portions and de clogging drainage along the entrance stretch.
Working with traditional tools and equipment, the volunteers demonstrated enthusiasm, teamwork and responsibility towards their institution and community. The initiative provided a meaningful opportunity to put into practice the core values of NSS, particularly its motto, “Not Me But You.”
The NSS Unit appreciated the enthusiastic participation and commitment of the volunteers, noting that such experiential learning nurtures socially responsible and community oriented professionals.
NU hosts international lecture series on Tethyan geodynamics: Department of Geology, Nagaland University (NU), Kohima Campus, Meriema, hosted an international lecture series and interactive session titled “From Alps to the Himalaya: Tethyan Geodynamics, Stratigraphy and Seismic Hazard” on August 6, in collaboration with AGH University of Krakow, Poland.
Organised under the Polish grant project “Internationalization of AGH University of Krakow through Educational and Research Cooperation with Academic Institutions in Central and South Asia,” the programme aimed to promote collaborative research and educational opportunities through comparative studies of the European (Alpine) and Himalayan orogenic systems.
Dr. Michal Krobicki of University of Krakow highlighted key geological features of the Alpine system to inspire younger researchers while detailing upcoming collaborative projects and workshops. NU Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. N. Venuh emphasized the need for international academic partnerships and comparative research in advancing geo scientific knowledge.
The technical session, moderated by Ch. Mangi Khuman, brought together faculty, students and invited delegates. Dr. Krobicki detailed occurrence of Tethyan fossils and depositional environment reconstructions, while Dr. Krzysztof Starzec presented an overview of Quaternary seismic deposits within Indian and Nepalese Himalayas. Dr. Anna Kwietnaik demonstrated geophysical subsurface exploration analysis and earthquake hazard studies.
NU Lumami launches AI training programme: A one day training programme titled “Igniting Young Minds: A Training Programme on Artificial Intelligence and Multidisciplinary Research” was held at the Multidisciplinary Research Centre (MDRC), Nagaland University, Lumami, on August 7.
NU Vice Chancellor Prof. J.K. Patnaik, in his address, spoke about the importance of education in North East India and the role of Multidisciplinary Research Centre (MDRC) in promoting research. He encouraged students to make use of the SWAYAM platform for learning and skill development.
An expert talk by Prof. Ambrish Singh on Artificial Intelligence emphasized the judicious use of AI in real life. The programme was chaired by Dr. Thejano, with an introduction to MDRC delivered by Dr. Alka.
Jubilee Memorial College holds NSS orientation: Jubilee Memorial College (JMC) held its National Service Scheme (NSS) orientation programme on August 7 at JMC Hall.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. I. Tovishe Phucho, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, NU Lumami, and NSS Programme Coordinator, NU, dwelt on the theme “Inspiring Youth through Selfless Service.” He explained the history of NSS, launched on September 24, 1969 with 37 universities and 40,000 student volunteers, and highlighted its growth into one of India’s largest youth volunteer movements.
Dr. Phucho discussed the structure, objectives, motto, symbol, badge and activities of NSS, explaining that the motto “Not Me But You” reflected the spirit of democratic living and selfless service. He said the aim of NSS was development of students’ personality through community service.
He further spoke about roles of Programme Officers and volunteers, regular activities, special camping programmes, National Youth Festival, Republic Day Camps, NSS Awards, and importance of completing 240 hours of voluntary service over two years to earn the NSS certificate.
Encouraging students to take part in environmental conservation, save water and energy, reduce waste and actively serve communities, Dr. Phucho stressed that youth are the driving force of nation building.
The release added that Etilila Jamir shared her experiences at the North East NSS Youth Festival, describing it as a memorable learning journey that exposed her to different cultures, strengthened confidence and teamwork.
The final session was delivered by Dheeraj Kumar, District Youth Officer, My Bharat, Mokokchung, on “Empowering Youth for Community Development and Nation Building.” He emphasized that true nation building begins with character development and selfless service, urging students to use their potential positively, stay away from social evils and help others without expecting anything in return.
Principal of JMC, Dr. Imtiwati Jamir delivered the welcome address, appreciating the NSS Programme Officer for organising the orientation. He reminded students that education should not be limited to classroom learning but should prepare them to contribute meaningfully to society, and encouraged students to actively participate in community service and nation-building.
