DIMAPUR: As part of “Our School, Our Responsibility,” a cleanliness initiative led by Shikshalokam’s mantra4change in collaboration with YouthNet, schools and communities across Nagaland came together to take responsibility for the surroundings of their schools.
The campaign, which began on September 15-marking International Day of Democracy-will conclude on October 2, observed as Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Bharat Diwas. Communities are encouraged to take responsibility for the first 100 metres around their schools, the stretch children walk through, wait in and pass every day.
This week, clean up drives were carried out across Kohima, Kiphire, Tseminyu, Tuensang and Mon. The activities commenced on September 15 at Government High School Chingmelen, Tuensang, followed by Government High School Yangphi, Kiphire, Government Middle School PHE Ward, Kiphire, Government Primary School Tseminyu, and Government High School Tseminyu New Town. On September 25, Government Higher Secondary School Tseminyu and Kano Memorial School, Tizit Village conducted their drives, followed by Government Primary School Longphaoh Village and Government Primary School Kenuozou on September 26.
Through these efforts, students, schools and communities are promoting cleaner surroundings, civic responsibility and collective ownership of public spaces. The initiative emphasises that caring for a school does not stop at its gate-the first 100 metres around a school are part of a child’s everyday journey, and keeping these spaces clean and safe is a shared responsibility of the community.
Organisers said the campaign seeks to instil civic responsibility, encourage waste free surroundings and foster safer, healthier environments for children.
