Congress candidate attacked in Assam

Congress candidate from Assam’s Naduar assembly constituency, Sunil Kumar Chetry, was attacked by miscreants, allegedly backed by the ruling BJP, during the campaign for the upcoming state polls, a party leader said.
The candidate’s convoy was attacked in the Napalm bypass of the assembly segment on Monday evening, he said. Chetry, who is pitted against senior BJP leader Padma Hazarika, fell on the ground and was seen groaning before he was taken to a private hospital for treatment. Assam Pradesh Congress president Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the supporters of the ruling party had carried out the attack, and demanded that those involved be arrested immediately.
He said, “All are equal under the law”, and urged the administration to treat members of both the ruling and opposition parties equally. Gogoi alleged that the attack on a candidate speaks volumes about the law and order situation in the state. The elections to the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on April 9. Votes will be counted on May 4.
