Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday stated that the growing number of major concerts across the Northeastern states should be seen as a collective regional benefit, not a matter of competition.
Sangma made this statement in response to his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma’s declaration to make Guwahati as one of the top global concert destinations.
“It’s a healthy competition. I always say positive competitiveness is very important and it is promoting the north east as a destination,” the Chief Minister said. He added: “Meghalaya and Shillong will have their niche…. and is different from Assam and Guwahati. Each state, each region, each city got its own uniqueness and competitive advantage. I think playing around those competitive advantages is should be the strategy of each state government of the region.”
Stating that the Assam Chief Minister’s statement fulfils a larger regional aspiration, Sangma said, “We have always said the northeast region is a music destination and we welcome this (Assam’s CM) move and hope all the northeast states move together in creating a healthy competition and promote music and concert economy for the entire nation and for the world.”
