A programme on consumer rights under the Consumer Awareness Bharat Yatra 2026 was held on February 18 at the Department of Mathematics Laboratory, Kohima Science College aimed at spread awareness among students about consumer rights and responsibilities.
Organised by Students Club, the event began with a welcome t, followed by an overview of the Bharat Yatra initiative, which was launched on December 24, 2015, under the leadership of Dr. Anant Sharma. The mission seeks to educate citizens across India on consumer protection and to prevent unfair trade practices, promoting the message “Jago Grahak Jago.”
Dr. Sharma explained that every individual purchasing goods or services is a consumer and stressed the importance of checking both quality and quantity to avoid exploitation. He highlighted the six basic consumer rights established in 1986: Right to Safety – Protection against harmful products; Right to Information – Access to complete product details before purchase; Right to Choose – Freedom to select from a variety of products; Right to Services – Assurance of proper service and fair treatment; Right to Compensation – Claiming damages for defective products and Right to Consumer Education – Responsibility to be informed about consumer rights.
He noted that despite these rights, many remain unaware, which is why the Yatra continues its nationwide campaign. Participants were also informed about Consumer Commissions in every state, where complaints can be filed and resolved within 90 days.
The session further discussed the growing influence of advertisements, mobile phones, and artificial intelligence in shaping consumer behaviour, stressing the need for vigilance in the digital age. Students were encouraged to use helpline numbers and actively report unfair practices. An interactive session followed, where students suggested measures for Nagaland, including greater awareness of Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on products. Dr. Sharma emphasized that change is possible only when consumers take responsibility, raise complaints, and refuse to remain silent against exploitation.
The programme concluded with a message urging students to stay informed, exercise their rights, and contribute to building a fair and safe marketplace for all.
