Consumer protection awareness at GHSS Chozuba

In compliance with central directives, a Consumer Protection Awareness programme was conducted at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Chozuba, for the teaching faculty and students of Classes 11 and 12 on June 17.
Chairing the session, Keneinuo Swuro explained the purpose of the programme and spoke on the functioning of the Legal Services Authority.
Welcoming the attendees, GHSS Chozuba principal, Sedukholu Thisa, expressed appreciation for the Phek District Legal Services Authority’s (PDLSA) ongoing legal awareness programmes, noting their benefits for students.
Delivering the keynote address, Shiekhozo Rhakho, Assistant Controller, LM&CP Phek, highlighted that consumer protection was about empowerment, mentioning that every individual was a consumer and has rights. He pointed out that the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, holds influencers and advertisers accountable for misleading information.
Resource speaker, Mezivolu T. Therieh, District & Sessions Judge cum Chairperson, PDLSA, discussed the new provisions in the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. She emphasized that consumers must be aware, ask questions, and stand for fairness. She also explained online transactions, the six rights of consumers, and the importance of receipts and cash memos as evidence.
The session also covered the three-tier redressal system—District, State, and National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions—and their pecuniary jurisdiction.
During the interactive session, Panel Lawyer, Sekhotso Rokha, addressed queries and advised consumers to check expiry dates and MRP prices. He also stated that medical negligence cases can now be addressed under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
