Conversion Case Erupts in Nagpur: Police Nab NGO Operator, Investigation in Full Swing

Nagpur police have arrested Riyaz Kazi, an NGO operator accused of engaging in alleged religious conversion activities through his organisation, the Universal Multipurpose Society (UMS). The arrest took place in the Mankapur police station area after multiple complaints were lodged by victims.

According to officials, Kazi allegedly targeted underprivileged children under the guise of providing education, while introducing them to Islamic teachings. Some girls also accused him of inappropriate behaviour, prompting swift police action.

Police Inspector Haresh Kalsekar confirmed that the arrest followed formal complaints and that a detailed investigation is now underway. Authorities are examining the NGO’s functioning, outreach, and funding patterns to determine whether a larger network was involved.

The case has reignited concerns about alleged forced or induced religious conversions in Maharashtra. Officials stressed that all allegations, including those related to misconduct and religious influence, are being taken seriously. If evidence points to wider involvement, strict action will be taken against all responsible parties.
