Agartala, Oct 4 (PTI): Counting of votes for elections to the village committees under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will commence on Monday at 8 am amid tight security arrangements, officials said on Sunday. Voting for 587 village committees of the Sixth Schedule areas was held on September 28, which recorded 81 per cent polling.
“We have taken all measures for smooth conduct of counting of votes. The exercise will be undertaken in 44 counting centers in all eight districts amidst tight security,” Secretary, State Election Commission, Anurag Sen said. The pace of counting, however, is likely to be slow as the voting was conducted with ballot papers, a practice for elections to local bodies, he said. Out of 4,597 seats of 587 village committees, voting took place for 2,950 seats, as 1,644 seats were won by the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the BJP unopposed. A total of 8,176 candidates from various political parties, including the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), BJP, CPI(M), Congress and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), are in the fray.
TMP supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Sunday appealed to people to not indulge in violence during counting.
“After 10 years of wait, the elections to the Village Councils were held and the counting is scheduled to take place on Monday. I appeal to all Tiprasa people to not indulge in violence in villages during or post the counting period,” he said in a Facebook post.
