In view of a recent incident involving the disclosure of a minor’s identity in the public domain, the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur has issued a reminder to individuals and organizations, including media houses, civil society groups, and institutions of their legal and ethical duty to uphold the privacy of children in conflict with the law (CCL).
Citing Section 74 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, CP emphasized that disclosing any detail that may lead to the identification of a child– such as name, photograph, school, family, address– is strictly prohibited under the law and punishable offence, attracting imprisonment for up to six months, a fine up to Rs. 2 lakh, or both.
CP stressed that such violation would not only attract legal consequences but also cause deep psychological and social harm to the child and their family. It urged media houses, content creators and public to refrain from posting, sharing, or publishing such detail in any form. “Together, let us strive to protect the rights and integrity of every child,” CP stated.
