Patkai Christian College, in collaboration with the Chümoukedima District Cricket Association, inaugurated a new concrete cricket practice pitch at the college ground on October 3. The inauguration ceremony commenced with faculty, students and cricket enthusiasts in attendance.
The special guest, joint secretary of the Nagaland Cricket Association, Watinuksung Jamir, also addressed the gathering. He spoke on cricket’s unifying power and its ability to instil values of discipline, perseverance and teamwork. Urging students to make full use of the facility, he credited visionary leaders for the development of cricket in the state, naming chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio as a guiding force behind the initiative.
Jamir added that under the leadership of Dr. Rio, the Nagaland Cricket Association is striving to extend cricketing benefits across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the college administration, Principal Dr. Thepfuvilie Pieru underscored the significance of integrating sports into education. He acknowledged that while Patkai Christian College is among the oldest private institutions in Nagaland and celebrated its Golden Jubilee last year, it continues to face infrastructural challenges, particularly in sports.
“While we have the space, we did not have proper facilities to support our students. With the establishment of this cricket practice pitch, we aim to encourage and inspire students to pursue cricket alongside their academics,” Dr. Pieru stated. He expressed optimism that the new facility would help unlock the potential of many students, some of whom may go on to become professional cricketers.
Dean of Students, Wetshete Thopi, chaired the programme and emphasized the importance of nurturing youth talent through sports, highlighting its role in building discipline, teamwork and enabling students to pursue their cricketing aspirations.
The programme concluded with a closing prayer by Chaplain of Patkai Christian College, Rev. Dr. Vichükho Ngukha, followed by the official inauguration of the cricket pitch by the special guest.
