Troops of the 78 Battalion CRPF and police personnel of PS Sechu Zubza recovered 14.312 kg of suspected opium during a security check on National Highway 29 near the Peducha old police picket on May 23.
The contraband was recovered in a Tata Winger traveling from Senapati, Manipur to Dimapur.
According to inspector Vimelie Chüsi, the suspected owner, Dharam Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, had boarded the vehicle in Senapati, Manipur. During the routine frisking, passengers were asked to step out and open their luggage when Singh requested permission to use the restroom. However, he attempted to flee and was chased down and apprehended by security personnel.
Upon inspecting his bag, authorities found two large packets of suspected opium wrapped in black polythene, two containers of Khaini filled with suspected opium, one small black polythene packet, and cash amounting to Rs. 56,500 were recovered.
The recovered substance was weighed on-site in front of the Magistrate of Sechu Zubza, and Singh, along with the seized items, was handed over to PS Zubza for legal proceedings.
