DIMAPUR: Chakroma Students’ Union (CSU) has warned against the illegal dumping of railway construction debris, waste and hazardous materials within Chakhrama jurisdiction.
In a press release, CSU president Menokhriele Chalieu and general secretary Rokoselie Geisuo, expressed concern over the indiscriminate disposal of construction waste into streams, rivers and public areas, which it said posed serious threats to the environment and public health.
The Union directed contractors and agencies to comply with environmental laws and waste management directives, emphasising responsible and sustainable development.
CSU emphasised that every contractor and executing agency has a responsibility to ensure that all waste generated during construction activities is collected, transported and disposed of only at designated and approved sites in accordance with applicable laws and environmental standards. The Union appreciated the ongoing railway infrastructure project and recognised its significance in enhancing connectivity, creating economic opportunities and fostering long term development for the Nagas.
It reiterated support for developmental initiatives that contribute to the growth and progress of the region, but stressed that such development must be executed responsibly and sustainably, with strict adherence to environmental laws, safety standards and waste management regulations, ensuring that the environment and the interests of the local community are fully protected.
CSU further cautioned that any continued violation or negligence would be viewed seriously, warning that such actions would invite serious consequences and legal action.
