Culmination of Swachhata Hi Seva & observance of Gandhi Jayanti

The culmination programme of the fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Seva and celebration of Mahatma Gandhi 154th birth anniversary was observed by various organizations including educational institutions by carrying out massive cleanliness drive and other activities at various location across the state.


Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and Rotary Club Dimapur (RCD) jointly commemorated Swachhata Diwas, under the theme “Dimapur Vs Garbage”, at RCD Conference Hall.


Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal, highlighted on the ongoing Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), mentioning that the mission has been celebrated since 2014 commemorating the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.


He expressed gratitude towards the diverse segments of society participating in the fortnight event. Jaiswal also lauded the commendable efforts put into drainage maintenance and plastic waste removal in Dimapur and considered the campaign to be a significant success, emphasizing that the city was moving in the right direction.
On waste segregation challenges, he stressed on the importance of citizens recognizing the impact of segregating waste within their households, saying that such practice would directly enhance the working conditions and health of sanitation workers.


He therefore urged all the citizens to unite in their efforts to make Dimapur a cleaner and more environmentally-friendly city. “The problems of garbage, plastic waste, and blocked drainage will become a thing of the past if we all come together and strive for a better, cleaner Dimapur”, he stated.


Meanwhile, DMC Administrator, W Manpai Phom, delivered a concise overview of the activities conducted under the campaign and extended gratitude to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for their unwavering support throughout the fortnight long initiative.


Phom highlighted that the campaign commenced on September 15 and concluded on October 2.
He expressed optimism that the enthusiasm for a cleaner Dimapur would not diminish, but rather served as a cornerstone for continued efforts in maintaining the town’s cleanliness.


Earlier, the programme was chaired by consultant, Waste Management, DMC, Adrian Mahung, and short speeches by president, RCD, Subir Saha, and president, Team Better Dimapur, Mhonjan Lotha. The event culminated with felicitation of ten dedicated sanitation workers from DMC by RCD.
KOHIMA: In Kohima, as part of the culmination programme, a cleanliness drive was conducted in Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima under the theme, “Garbage Free India”.


Addressing the gathering, MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso underscored the importance of individual contributions towards achieving a cleaner India. He urged citizens to incorporate clean habits into their daily routines.
Delivering short speech, KMC Administrator, Lanusenla Longkumer informed that the intensive move was to create awareness of cleanliness in every part of the country and that along with community participation the responsibility in keeping the town clean will be adopted by everyone in the days to come.


The cleanliness drive around NHAK saw active participation from the district administration, NHAK medical staff, Kohima Municipal Council, Kohima Chamber of Commerce & Industries (KCCI), and Zupzup. Further intensifying the initiative, National Service Scheme (NSS) students from Don Bosco College engaged in plogging at notable locations such as Sokhriezie Market & Lake and various junctions leading to Naga Bazaar.


PVHSS: Students and faculty of Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School (PHVSS) observed “Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign” in honor of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2.
The event began with a universal peace prayer, followed by speeches from Pritam Debnath of class 11-Arts and Assistant Teacher, Mala Sharma. The school’s principal, Monoj Bhattacharjee, delivered a speech on Mahatma Gandhi’s life and legacy.


Earlier, on September 30, the students, in collaboration with the Territorial Army under the Indian Army’s guidance, undertook a mass cleanliness initiative within the school premises.
Marking Gandhi Jayanti and aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide “Shramdaan for Swachhata” call, another cleanliness drive was conducted around Milan Mandir Road.


Principal Bhattacharjee stressed the importance of cleanliness in preventing diseases and appealed to everyone to integrate clean habits into their daily lives. In closing remark, he expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic participation that made the event a success.


Peace Cente: In honor of Mahatma Gandhi’s 154th birth anniversary, the 16th Peace Knit 2023 concluded at the Peace Centre, Chümoukedima on October 2. Organized by the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) in collaboration with notable organizations, the event attracted delegates like Br. Dr. Simon Coelho and Dr. Sr. Celine Crasta.


Dr. Sr. Celine emphasized Gandhi’s peace-centric approach and inspired attendees with his life story, urging them to adopt his principles. Br. Dr. Simon showcased a documentary on Gandhi and facilitated an engaging session for participants.


Principal of NEISSR, Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, thanked the delegates and guests. The convention was held on the themed “Action for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals”.
MGM: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, MGM College organized an essay writing competition under the theme “Fostering Literary Excellence” on October 2.


A press release from MGM media cell informed that the competition was held to nurture the love for writing, enhance written skills, and encouraged thoughtful analysis of Gandhian topics and to explore his ideas through their creative expressions, deepening their understanding of his principles and promoting a culture of critical thinking and intellectual discourse.


The participants were allocated one hour to complete their essays based on Gandhian theme.
In the competition, Wahida Begum Tapader of Semester B.Com bagged the first position followed by Sanjana Maghay, 5th Semester B.A and -Siamthianmawi, 1st Semester B A in second and third positions. They were awarded certificate and cash awards by St.Thomas Mission Society.


Altogether 12 enthusiastic students participated at the competition. SJU: To mark the nationwide cleanliness drive under “Shramdaan for Swachhata”, the Eco Club of St. Joseph University led by the club coordinator Dr. Magdalene Kiewhuo, carried out a cleanliness drive. The cleanliness drive started at the university campus and culminated at Ikishe Village.


DBCK: Don Bosco College, Kohima (DBCK) in collaboration with Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), launched cleanliness drive at different areas and wards of Kohima town, a consonance to the “Swachh Bharat Mission”-Swachhata Hi Seva-“Garbage Free Nagaland”.


The cleanliness drive was flagged of by KMC administrator, Lanusenla Longkumer, earlier she visited the college and motivated the NSS volunteers concerning the segregation of waste.


The release further informed that DBCK has more than 1000 NSS volunteers, out of which 200 volunteers helped KMC in the first phase of cleanliness drive in the month and August and September and on October 2, more than 700 NSS Volunteer along with seven Program offices participated in the cleanliness drive. The areas covered were Sokhriezie Lake, BOC Market area, P.R Hill Junction, Bethel Hospital, NSF Martyrs Park, Naga Hospital area, New Market area and Census Office area.
