Curfew in Chungtia village after pre-poll clash

The pace of the election intensified as the by-poll to 28-Koridang A/C witnessed a law and order situation Friday morning, following a clash between supporters of two rival candidates at Chungtia village.
Confirming the incident, deputy commissioner Mokokchung Ajit Kumar Verma, said police personnel rushed to the spot immediately and brought the situation under control. A magistrate was also deputed to oversee law and order in the area. He informed that 12 persons were arrested in connection with the clash and a case has already been registered. DC also assured that strict measures have been initiated to prevent further disturbances and to ensure peaceful conduct of the by-poll.
Meanwhile, DC, who is also the district magistrate, imposed curfew within the jurisdiction of Chungtia village, citing apprehension of disturbance to public peace and tranquillity in view of the forthcoming by-election.
The order stated that assembly of five or more persons has been prohibited within the jurisdiction of Chungtia village. The curfew will be in force daily from 6 pm to 5 am until further orders.
Exemptions have been granted to police, armed forces and security personnel on duty, magistrates and government officials on official duty, medical personnel, ambulance and emergency services, as well as individuals engaged in essential services or election duty.
The district magistrate stated that the restrictions were necessary, reasonable and proportionate to maintain public order and prevent any threat to human life and property.
The order was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and came into force with immediate effect.
Violation of the order will attract prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and other relevant provisions of law.

Candidates in fray: Meanwhile, for the 28-Koridang Assembly by-poll, BJP has fielded Daochier I. Imchen, while NPP has nominated I. Abenjang while Imtiwapang from Chungtia village on Friday declared his candidature for the by-election.
According to reports, six candidates are likely to be in the fray, including nominees of BJP, NPP and Independent. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, scrutiny will be held on March 24, the last date for withdrawal is March 26, and polling is scheduled for April 9.
On Friday, Imtiwapang announced that he would contest as an Independent candidate and thanked the village council for allowing him to declare his candidature with their blessings.
Meanwhile, the village council chairman urged citizens to participate peacefully in the electoral process and cautioned against any disturbance.
