The 25th edition of the NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy officially kicked off on September 13, at IG Stadium in Kohima, with the Chedema Village Youth Organisation (CVYO) delivering a dominant 7-0 victory over Amigos FC Tesophenyu in the tournament’s opening match.
CVYO’s standout forward, Lunminlian (jersey no. 10), was the star of the show, netting two goals in the 4th and 38th minutes. His exceptional performance earned him the coveted ‘Man of the Match’ award, which was presented by ASU Tribunal General, Rokoketu Sechü.

Earlier, in his inaugural address, Minister for Rural Development and SIRD, Metsubo Jamir, emphasized the significance of the tournament not just as a celebration of football, but as a solemn tribute to the sacrifices made by Late Kekuojalie Sachü and Late Vikhozo Yhoshü, two Naga students who laid down their lives in 1986 during student protests. The Minister acknowledged their sacrifice and stressed that the NSF Trophy stands as a beacon of remembrance, unity, and shared purpose.
He further highlighted the theme of this year’s edition, “Goal for Peace,” noting that while football unites players on the field, the true goal should always be harmony off the field.
Additionally, Jamir mentioned that next year would witness the 25th edition of the Dr. T Ao Trophy, which will be hosted in Mokokchung. This tournament, he said, would honor the legacy of Dr. T Ao, a pioneer of Indian football, while also promoting sporting excellence and regional pride.
In his welcome address, ASU president, Diezevisie Nakhro spoke about the unifying power of football, noting how the NSF Trophy has helped nurture young talent while promoting the values of teamwork, unity, and progressive activism.
President of the Naga Students’ Federation, Mteisuding Reraang also reflected on the sacrifices made by Lt. Kekuojalie Sachü and Lt. Vikhozo Yhoshü, recounting the tragic events, when peaceful student protests against the extension of the Disturbed Areas Act were met with indiscriminate police firing, claiming the lives of these two young martyrs.
