The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday announced that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, bringing heavy rainfall to several districts of West Bengal between October 28 and 31.
According to IMD’s latest bulletin, the system is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28. Cyclone Montha, which is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday, is expected to make landfall on the coast of Andhra Pradesh in the evening or night of October 28, with wind speeds touching 90-100 km/hour.
The name “Montha”, suggested by Thailand, means “fragrant flower” or “beautiful flower.” The system is currently located about 990 km southeast of Kakinada and is expected to cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada on the evening or night of October 28, as per an official release. It also forecast light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at many or some places, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during October 30 to November 1.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph are also likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on October 29 and 30.
