The Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) officials undertook area tours on April 14 and 15, across Phek district, to spread awareness about the standing resolutions of the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) on conservation of Biodiversity.
In a press release issued by president CYF, Kevesa Khamo vice president Nuveta Khusoh satted that the team met with several village leaders, including their affiliated youth leaders to motivate them in their efforts in the implementation of the CPO resolutions, as well as to understand their challenges.
It may be noted that any form of hunting, fishing with harmful equipments, extraction of medicinal plants, indiscriminate jungle burning and import of pigs above 30 kgs is completely banned within the Chakhesang jurisdiction, and the CYF shall continue to implement the CPO resolutions regarding the same, by penalising defaulters, for the greater interest of the community at large.
It may also be noted that the CPO resolution has allowed the use of borewell only in a controlled manner, whereby, permission may be sought from the CPO for borewell drilling.
During the tour, the CYF caught five defaulters and will be penalized as per the standing resolutions. The CYF warned that repeated offenders shall face a more stringent penalty.
Through the initiatives, CYF said that there has been transformative impact of community support in safeguarding wildlife. The increasing sightings of birds and animals serve as a testament to the collective efforts of local communities in preserving our rich biodiversity.
As a vital ecological corridor connecting Burma to other nations, Nagaland plays an essential role in maintaining regional environmental balance. The CYF acknowledged the villages who are stringently implementing and requested support from all the villages in Chakhesang jurisdiction regarding the same.
The CYF also urged the neighbouring villages from other tribes, bordering Chakhesang villages to respect the standing CPO resolutions and refrain from hunting in the Chakhesang jurisdiction.
The CYF warned that they shall begin to take action from such defaulters, as hunters from other tribes continue to pose a menace to the bordering villages.
