CYF opposes proposed radar installation at Pfutsero

DIMAPUR, MAY 3 (NPN):

Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) has strongly opposed the proposed installation of an Indian Air Force mountain radar system at Pfutsero town in Phek district, asserting that it would not tolerate any infringement on customary land ownership and community rights protected under Article 371(A) of the Constitution.
In a press statement, CYF president Kevesa Khamo and general secretary Nokho Nyekha said it stood by the position of the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) and questioned the state government for not undertaking proper and transparent consultation with the local community prior to the proposal.
Raising concerns, CYF pointed out that Pfutsero was one of the most densely populated towns in the district and said any installation at the site would adversely affect residents.
It also stated that the proposed area was emerging as a tourist destination contributing to the local economy, particularly benefiting youths, and warned that the project could disrupt these opportunities.
The front further stressed that the Chakhesang community had long been committed to conservation of biodiversity and protection of forests and wildlife, adding that any disturbance to the ecosystem would not be acceptable. It said agriculture remained the backbone of the district, with a majority of the population dependent on farming, and expressed concern that the proposed site, surrounded by organic farmland, would be impacted.
Highlighting water scarcity in the region, CYF said the town depended on groundwater and natural springs, and cautioned that the installation could affect water availability and quality, as well as soil conditions.
While acknowledging the importance of national security, the front stated that such measures should not come at the cost of local population and constitutional rights.
It also pointed out that Phek district did not share any international boundary and did not face direct external threats.
