Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) undertook area tours on March 22-23 and held coordination meetings with its affiliated units at Chozuba Village, Pfutsero Town, and Phek Town.
A press release by CYF informed that the coordination meetings were attended by 200 youth leaders from 62 units. It said the tour aimed to explore the realities at the grassroots level, and understand the everyday challenges faced by the youth leaders, especially in implementing the standing resolutions of the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) regarding the conservation of biodiversity and the ban on import of pigs in Chakhesang jurisdiction.
During the tour, CYF also conducted surprise checking within its jurisdiction, and confiscated a three hunting rifles. The team also caught hunters from other tribes, hunting in the reserved forests of the Chakhesangs.
CYF reiterated that any form of hunting, fishing with harmful equipment, extraction of medicinal plants, and import of unvaccinated piglets, and all pigs above 30 kgs was completely banned within the Chakhesang jurisdiction.
The youth front said it will continue to implement the CPO resolutions regarding the same, by penalising defaulters, for the greater interest of the community at large. CYF said conserving nature and maintaining the integrity of ancestral forests remain its core activities, in order to make sure that the biodiversity survives for generations to come.
With the experiences from the tour, CYF said it would soon chart new measures to tackle the defaulters, and also raise consciousness among its citizens, and beyond. Taking into consideration the concerns shared by the youth leaders about the drug menace in society, CYF said the issue would be discussed with the authorities and experts on the field very soon, in order to figure out how to best deal with the concerning situation at hand.
