CYO bans riverbed mining across Chakhroma area

DIMAPUR, NOV 6 (NPN): Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) has reiterated its ban on unauthorised riverbed mining, dredging and extraction activities across all rivers, streams and water bodies within the Chakhroma jurisdiction. CYO through its information and publicity wing said the prohibition was based on a joint resolution adopted by Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) on October 31, 2025, in consultation with all village councils under its jurisdiction. It also cited a regulatory order issued by deputy commissioner (DC) Chümoukedima, on November 3, 2025.
The youth body expressed concern that some individuals, contractors and machinery operators continued illegal riverbed extraction despite administrative directives and monitoring mechanisms.
CYO also prohibited the washing of rocks and boulders quarried from mountains and hill slopes in rivers and streams. It said the practice caused siltation, polluted water sources used for drinking and irrigation, and harmed aquatic life.
Issuing a final warning, CYO directed all individuals, contractors, vehicle operators and extraction units to stop the activities immediately. It warned that violators would face penalties and immediate confiscation of machinery, tools and transport vehicles.
The youth organisation also directed affiliated youth units, village monitoring groups and residents to remain vigilant and report violations without delay.
