DIMAPUR: Following torrential rainfall and thunderstorms on July 18–19, the Deputy Commissioner and chairman DDMA Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, has issued a press release detailing severe natural calamities across the district, with Tuli sub division hardest hit by massive landslides, mudslides and flash floods.
According to DIPR report, the disaster completely severed crucial road networks, power grids and telecom infrastructure. Vulnerable citizens from low lying areas in Tuli Town were swiftly evacuated, while the district administration launched targeted relief operations, distributing essential materials and setting up relief camps. Dedicated water tankers were deployed to provide clean drinking water and flush out mud debris from flooded homes, while mobile networks were restored and strictly monitored to ensure stable communication.
A Medical Camp and Mobile Medical Unit with critical medicines from Mokokchung HQ were activated to prevent vector borne disease outbreaks.
Severe landslides devastated the highway between Chuchuyimlang and Unger, as well as large sections between Tuli Town and Tzudikong, halting inter state transit. The NH 702D Mokokchung–Mariani route remains the only functional corridor for essential commodities, with strict traffic restrictions enforced to prevent gridlock.
Ground links connecting Mokokchung to Mon and Longleng districts were blocked. Field teams from NHIDCL and PWD (R&B) are working to clear the Changtongya–Longleng and Merangkong–Tamlu highways. Villages including Salulamang and Yajang C remain isolated, with local administrative officers and village councils coordinating restoration of ground access.
Severe utility failures were also reported. Distribution pipelines in parts of Tuli sub division were disrupted, with PHED undertaking emergency repairs. Power lines feeding the entire Chuchuyimlang Administrative Circle were destroyed, and the Power Department is fast tracking reconstruction.
To streamline emergency responses, DC Verma empowered Area Administrative Officers as Incident Commanders, regulated local supply lines to prevent shortages, and fully activated the Distrvict Emergency Operation Centre at the DC Office Mokokchung.
Meanwhile, DDMA extended appreciation to government departments, security forces, CSOs, village and town functionaries for round the clock support. It also acknowledged NSDMA and the Home Department, under the leadership of the Chief Minister, for immediate release of Rs. 36 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to finance ongoing relief activities.
