A programme on Deeper Public Engagement and Consultation under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) 2024–25 was held on September 9 at DBHSS Auditorium, Kohima, organised by Kohima District Administration in collaboration with Don Bosco College, Kohima.
According to DIPR report, the initiative aimed to sensitise students—identified as key influencers under NCAP—on the importance of clean air and their role in shaping community behaviour.
The programme also highlighted infrastructure and technological upgrades being undertaken in Kohima city, including road pavement, greening initiatives, air quality monitoring systems, water fountains, mechanised street sweeping and improved traffic management.
The event began with a plantation drive led by Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, and Principal of Don Bosco College, Fr. Dr. Tious Varghese, who planted a Ficus Benjamina sapling.
In his address, DC Buchem recalled his student days at Don Bosco College and shared his personal experience of being hospitalised during the first wave of Covid-19, which deepened his appreciation for clean air. He described air pollution as one of the greatest environmental challenges and urged citizens to adopt small but impactful practices such as tree planting, avoiding waste burning, reducing plastic use, recycling and walking short distances.
Delivering the keynote address, EAC Kohima, Dr. Riku Khutso, highlighted major causes of air pollution including suspended dust particles, vehicular emissions, waste burning and construction dust. He cautioned that Kohima records high levels of PM10 and PM2.5, which pose serious health risks, and stressed the need for both government action and public participation.
Earlier, Principal Fr. Dr. Tious Varghese welcomed the gathering and emphasised the importance of education that fosters environmental responsibility. The session was chaired by Dean of Academics, DBCK, Dr. Jarani Maheo, with the opening prayer led by Rector, DBCK, Fr. Dr. Xavier Mattam. A special number was presented by BA 5th Semester students, and the vote of thanks was delivered by HoD, Department of English, Rhilo Mero.
As part of the programme, a prepared speech competition was held. Rüvuomenuo Sorhie (Political Science B) secured first position, followed by Yanpothung Ngullie (History) and Neitsizolie Chakruno (Commerce). Consolation prizes were awarded to Tuhafisharu (Zoology), Lasheba M. Yimchunger (Education), Vimesienuo Tetso (Political Science A), Alice Khongsai (English) and Meheti Tep (Botany).
