DC Kohima prohibits killing stray dogs

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohima has invalidated the “shoot-at-sight” orders for stray dogs issued by certain organizations and associations within Kohima Municipal wards and villages under Kohima district.

In an order, DC Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, informed that such actions were in violation of provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (PCA Act) and the Bharatiya Naya Sanhita (BNS), which prohibit the killing of animals, including stray dogs. “Acts of this nature are deemed illegal under the law,” DC stated.

Therefore, the DC has strictly prohibited any individual, organization, or association from engaging in such activities. DC informed that presence of any stray dogs should be reported to the office of the municipal/town council authorities in the urban areas, or to the respective village authorities/conceded area administrative officers in rural areas.

DC also informed that the concerned authorities, with the help of the chief veterinary office, would take care of such stray dogs as per laid down procedures of relevant laws. DC cautioned that strict action would be taken against those found violating the directive under relevant provisions of Act/Law.
