Deputy Commissioner (DC) Niuland has prohibited all mining activities of sand, sand gravel, boulder etc in and around the stretch of Ato Ghoki over (Zubza river) under Niuland District with immediate effect.
In an order, DC Niuland, Sara S Jamir, said excessive instream sand and gravel mining activities in and around the stretch was severely affecting the ecological balance leading to degradation of rivers, soil erosion, depression of water level, scarcity of water and flood in the area. DC stated that unabated mining was not only illegal but also severely affecting the stability and foundation of the Zubza bridge, which is the only lifeline connecting district/district HQ with the rest of the State.
DC has cautioned that any defaulter would be liable for a fine of Rs.10,000 along with necessary action under the relevant section of law.
